  • About the Meeting

    Overview

Water supply and sanitation services, although recognized as a human right and essential to prevent diseases and promote development, continue to face major challenges to mobilize sufficient resources to meet the needs of the growing population. According to the Joint Monitoring Report Update 2015, globally an estimated 663 million people still lack access to improved drinking water sources and 2.4 billion people have no access to improved sanitation facilities- of them, 946 million defecate in the open. Recognizing that local resource mobilization and innovative financing are key pillars to achieving universal access for water and sanitation- Sustainable Development Goal 6- and following up on the Third International Conference on Financing for Development held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in July 2015, the Government of Senegal, AMCOW, and UNICEF in collaboration with African Development Bank, ECCAS, ECOWAS, ECOBANK, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands (DGIS), European Investment Bank, Islamic Development Bank , Bank of Africa and IRC, is organizing the first regional meeting on innovative financing for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in West & Central Africa to explore how private sector and domestic financial resources can be mobilized to ensure access and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
